Battle of Swing - FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions

General

What is this event about? Why are you doing this? The Battle of Swing is intended to bring a Lindy Hop and Jazz Dance competition to the Seattle area that will inspire dancers and non-dancers alike, set to live music. The focus will be to create an event that is fun and inspiring, both musically and dancing, and to spotlight local talent in a way that is open and inviting to everyone.
It says "more info coming soon" about some details I don't want to miss out on. When will this be updated? The best way to stay up to date is to sign up for our email announcement list - where we will post updates right away! You can expect an update on the venue and bands in the next couple of weeks, and then the schedule and contest details will be updated so that everyone has plenty of time to prepare.
This is happening pretty close to Lindy Bout (Western Canadian Swing Championships). Are you competing with them? Lindy Bout is going to be a great event, and we are certainly not trying to compete with them. If you are in the area, we encourage you to attend and compete in both events. Lindy Bout is filling a gap left in the Canadian swing scene in much the same way that the Battle of Swing is filling a gap that is missing in the US Pacific Northwest. You will find that, other than minor differences in language, the two events will have very different divisions and flavors.
Can I take pictures? Can I shoot video? Yes. You are asked to pay a photo/video fee to help pay for the event, but once you have the photo/video pass, you are free to take whatever pictures you want. We will want a copy of the pictures and/or videos, of course, but if we use them, we will credit you for taking them.
This sounds cool! How can I help? The best way you can help out is to spread the word. You can download our flyer here, and if you want to print them out and distribute them, that would be great. You can also help by just signing up. If you want other ways to help out, please feel free to contact us..

Competing

I'm too scared to compete! Why should I do this? There are many reasons people compete, but we'd like to encourage everyone to have fun themselves and make it fun and inspiring for the audience. When people leave the show with smiles on their faces and a fire in their eyes, then all of us have won.
I want to compete with a partner/team, but I don't know who will compete with me! What's the best way to find someone to compete with? The absolute best way is to go out dancing a lot, and ask people. The second best way is to go to the Seattle Swing Forums and post in the appropriate topic, asking for anyone interested in competing with you. The absolute worse way is to sign people up without their knowledge.
Why are the competitions to live music? Live music can inspire dancers in a way that recordings cannot. We have selected an orchestra that is interested in working with the dancers to bring out the best in both the musicians and dancers. Live music will also mean that no dancer has an advantage over another because they've heard and memorized a certain song.
What kind of contests will there be? A detailed description of each division is available by clicking here.

Judging

Who's judging? How are judges selected? TBA. Details coming soon.
What are the criteria we will be judged on? Part of the reason we select good judges is so that we can trust in their own judgment of what makes dancing good or bad. We are trying not to dictate what exactly makes one's dancing good, and are rather trying to bring out the best, most inspiring performances by everyone. If we succeed, we make it hard for the judges to make their decisions, but that's just the way it goes.
Wait, so if there are no criteria, does that mean you won't disqualify anyone? That's right. There are entrance requirements to get into the contests, which are enforced. And there are certain things that the contestants are expected to abide by out of respect to the other contestants and the audience. But there are no disqualifications.
Are there any rules for the contests? There are certainly rules that all contestants are expected to abide by:
  • don't do anything illegal,
  • don't hurt anyone,
  • don't do anything offensive or culturally insensitive,
  • don't be a jerk.
We encourage everyone to hold other contestants in the highest respect, and to treat each other accordingly.
